NASCAR makes its second and final stop at a road course this season with Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
And this just may be the week that either Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart finally wins a race this year. They have combined to win eight of the last 11 races at this twisting, 11-turn layout.
Gordon was on his way to winning last year's race when he spun with two laps to go, opening the door for Stewart. Gordon has four wins at Watkins Glen, but they all came from 1997 to 2001.
Stewart has won four of the past six years and finished second and 11th in the other two races. He leads every statistical category imaginable and his last win on the circuit was here last year. This is the furthest into a season
Gordon has gone since 2002 without a victory, while Stewart has finished with two wins every year since 1999.
“I feel that we’re the guys that every time we go there that everybody has to pay attention to us in order to win,” Stewart said. “Now, there are times we don’t win, obviously, but we’re still in the hunt every time and got a shot.”
Points leader Kyle Busch won at the road course in Sonoma in June and has two top 10s in three races at Watkins Glen, so he’ll be a factor.
One major sleeper this week is Robby Gordon, who won both Cup road races in 2003.
"NASCAR drivers throughout the last couple years - I'm going to go back even as far as 10 years - they've started to put a lot of effort into their road racing because it's ... two of the 36 races," Gordon said. "And if you run the Nationwide car as well, it could be four.”
These road courses bring out road specialists, so names like Ron Fellows and Boris Said are also potential sleeper bets. Glen knows this track better than anyone, having competed in 14 NASCAR races here, including seven in Cup, five in Nationwide and two in the Craftsman Truck Series.
Among the Cup highlights are a third-place finish in 2005 and eighth in 2001. He also won the pole for the 1998 Nationwide - then Busch - race and finished fourth in the 2001 event.
“Even though I've had my share of ups and downs at The Glen, I still consider it my home track,” said Said, who was born in upstate New York. “I like everything about it.”
Said, however, will have to claim a spot through qualifying, so if that is rained out, as it has been three times in recent years, he is out of luck. And as of this writing, it is raining.
