The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic might feature one of the best battles we’ve seen in quite a while. Big Brown, winner of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and six of seven starts, could be going up against Curlin, the 2007 Horse of the Year and 9-2-2 in 13 starts. It’s the race everyone wants to see, but it may not be the best race for Big Brown and trainer Rick Dutrow.

Big Brown is coming off a semi-impressive win at the Haskell Invitational, and looks ripe for the picking if he doesn’t improve by October. Curlin would be defending his title at the Classic, if he runs it at all. His owners had originally planned to race the champion in the 2008 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris that month, but after his first race on a turf surface was only a second-place finish, against an average field of opponents, they may have changed their mind and set their goal on beating Big Brown at Santa Anita Park.

To win the Breeders’ Cup Classic Big Brown is currently getting 6/1, while Curlin is getting 5/2. There are also prop bets on one horse finishing better than the other, with Curlin as the favorite at -165. Big Brown comes in at +125. It has not been decided whether Curlin will race in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The odds on the two racing against each other are -200 that they won’t, and +150 that they will. Let’s all hope we get to see this great battle, it’s the only year you’ll see Big Brown running the Classic.
