PGA Tour events following a major generally don’t have the strongest fields, and this week’s RBC Canadian Open in Oakville, Ontario, is no exception. But that’s not to say you can’t make some money this week.

Only six of the top 25 players on the FedExCup rankings are here this week, with Anthony Kim (No. 5) and Ryuji Imada (No. 7) the only two in the top 10.

For sure one of the favorites will be Jim Furyk, a two-time winner of this tournament. Furyk picked up his second consecutive Canadian title a year ago, when he outlasted Vijay Singh by a stroke.

Singh won the tournament in 2004, the last time this event was at Glen Abbey Golf Club in suburban Toronto. Furyk (+600 this week on WagerWeb.com) has yet to win this year but has six top 10s in 19 starts.

Last week at the British Open at Royal Birkdale, Furyk tied for fifth, while Singh missed the cut. None of the players who finished ahead of Furyk will be at Glen Abbey.

"I really feel like you should always come back and defend your championship," Furyk said. "I had a lot of people thank me for coming back this week, which to me is kind of like, I appreciate it, but I feel like it's thanking me for something that you should do, if that makes sense. So I will come back. I haven't been to Glen Abbey in quite a few years, so I look forward to going back."

Certainly the best player in the field is Kim, who has won the Wachovia Championship and AT&T National this year. He has made just 43 starts as a professional and amassed more than $5 million in earnings. The 23-year-old also was in contention at the British Open, just two shots out of the Sunday lead, before a closing four-hole stretch doomed his chances there. This will be his first Canadian Open and, in fact, his first-ever trip to Canada. Kim is the WagerWeb.com favorite this week at +300.

Canadian Stephen Ames (+1100) certainly has a shot in front of his countrymen. He hasn’t missed a cut since January and has four finishes in the top 15 in his past five events, including a tie for seventh at the British Open. However, a Canadian hasn’t won this event since 1954, so that makes Ames and Mike Weir (+675) either due or players to steer clear of, although Weir almost won this event in 2004.

Just don’t plan on a first-time winner this week. That hasn’t happened at this event since 2002, before that it was in 1996 and prior to that was 1981.
